| Catalog Notes | A collection of humorous pictorial verse either written by or in the style of Heinrich Hoffmann. All titles were also published separately in the Slovenly Peter series. Originally printed in Germany under the title Lachende Kinder (Hamburg, 1850), at least written in part by Adolph Glassbrenner and illustrated by Theodor Hosemann; translated into English by Clara de Chatelain; cf. Jane Brown and Gregory Jones, "The English Struwwelpter and the birth of an international copyright," The library, 14:4 (December 2013), p. 400. Davis, Porter & Co. published in Philadelphia between 1865 and 1866. Cover printed in red and black ink. Wood engravings hand-colored under the direction of the publisher; drawn in the style of Heinrich Hoffmann. "Slovenly Peter; or, Cheerful stories and funny pictures. ... From the twenty-third edition of the celebrated German work of Dr. Henry Hoffman."--16 p., first count. "Slovenly Kate; and other pleasing stories and funny pictures. From the German of Th. Hosemann. A companion to 'Slovenly Peter.'"--16 p., second count. At head of title, "Slovenly Peter series.] [Fourth thousand." Copyright 1851 by Willis P. Hazard. "Sugary Tom, &c."--16 p., third count. "Funny leaves for the younger branches by Baron Krakemsides of Burstenoudelafen."--16 p., fourth count. "Baron Krakemsides of Burstendoudelafen is the pseudonym of Alfred Forrester. Illustrations might also be after Forrester, who used the illustrator pseudonym "Alfred Crowquill." Wood engraving, p. 16, signed: T. Frere. "The story of Johnny Look-in-the-Air and other funny stories and pictures. From the German of Dr. Thos. Hosemann [sic], author "Slovenly Peter," "King Nutcracker," "Simple Hans," etc."--14, [2] p., fifth count. "Dr. Thos. Hosemann" likely refers to Theodor Hosemann. "Child's mirror."--16 p., sixth count. "The slovenly Peter series. They are quarto in form, (size, 8 by 10 inches,) and from their size we are enabled to make the illustrations very large; and having them colored in bright colors, they present a very attractive series of books for very little children ... Those who desire to have the whole series neatly bound, can obtain them at the same price as for the paper covers, by inquiring for A laughter book for very little people; and Comical pages for little folks.
