| Catalog Notes | An adaptation of Thomas Day's History of Sandford and Merton. "[I]n order to maintain the identity of the book, it has been thought right to retain the proper names of Sandford, Merton, and Barlow, which form the only exceptions to the rule of using words of one syllable exclusively."--Preface, p. [3]. Cover title: Sanford and Merton. In words of one syllable. By Lucy Aikin (i.e., "Mary Godolphin"). The earliest publisher's catalogue located that advertises this title was the McLoughlin Brothers' catalogue of toy books (1879). At least three McLoughlin Bros. issues of this text are typographically identical, and have the same plate illustrations. However, the binding each represent different design styles that were used by McLoughlin Bros. at different times between 1879 and 1899. Issue in hand is bound in chromolithographed boards with cloth spine. Its upper cover bears a chromolithograph of a runaway horse, featuring pastel shades of blue and light green--characteristic of McLoughlin titles issued in the 1890s. Text printed in two columns. In chromolithographed boards with cloth spine. Plates chromolithographed. |
