| Catalog Notes | A prose adaptation from Charles Perrault's Les feÌes. Title and imprint statement transcribed from upper cover. Cover and plates chromolithographed. Apparently, the illustrations were pirated from Kate Greenaway's Aunt Louisa's London toy books: Diamonds and toads (1871). See Simon Houfe, Dict. of Brit. book illustrators and caricaturists (1978). Publisher's advertisement, lower cover, features ads for Big picture books for little children ("comprise fifty kinds") and "New paper dolls" (including Polly Prim, Gerty Good, and Jennie June). The descriptions of these book series and dolls match those given in the McLoughlin catalogue of toy books ... (New York, [1875]). The format and illustrations of the issue in hand are characteristic of the titles published in the Big picture books for little children series (listed as Aunt Louisa's big picture books in the publisher's trade catalogues). However, this title is not listed in the publisher's advertisement on the lower cover, nor is it listed in McLoughlin trade catalogues until 1880, when the series was described as containing fifty-eight titles. |
