| Catalog Notes | A paraphrase of George P. Webster's Santa Claus and his works. Title, copyright statement, series and inventory number transcribed from upper cover. Series and inventory number transposed from head of cover. Variant issues: in issue in hand, the illustration captioned, "Loading the Christmas tree" shows Santa on a ladder trimming the tree with a saw. In another issue, an illustration bearing the same caption shows Santa admiring the decorated tree. Color tints of the various illustrations also vary. Cover included in pagination. Cover chromolithographed. Full-page illustrations chromolithographed. Illustrations designed by British artist "Richard AndreÌ" (i.e., William Roger Snow). Extant correspondence with McLoughlin Bros. ca. 1877 refers to a "Santa Claus book" that he designed for the McLoughlin firm. See Yale University, Beinecke Library, Betsy Beinecke Shirley Collection of American Children's Literature, GEN MSS 764, Oversize Box 34, Folder 530. Oversize Box 34, Folder 531 in this collection has several watercolor drawings used as the models for the illustrations in this edition that are not signed but identified on their versos as the work of AndreÌ. |
