Catalog Notes | Cover title; series statement transposed; precedes imprint on cover. Caption title: Aladdin, and the wonderful lamp. A verse version of Aladdin, followed by a prose version. In the middle of the textual gathering is laid a series of chromolithographed plates forming a series of metamorphic pictures. The two outer leaves of the plate gathering form a double leaf--their outer margins depict a theatre proscenium, box seats, and orchestra pit--providing the effect of a theatrical performance. Within this double plate are bound a series of shorter double leaves, 15.6 cm in height that depict various scenes in Aladdin. These shorter plates are of varying widths, so that flipping a narrower plate changes the scene represented by this series of layered plates. "New stock for the seasons of 1882 and 1883. ... Pantomime toy books. ... Retail 35 cents each. Five kinds. They contain five set scenes, and nine trick changes, making fourteen transformations in all, with ten pages of descriptive letter-press or story. ... Fancy stiff covers in colors. Royal 8vo."--Catalogue of McLouglin Bros., toy books ..., (New York, [1882]). Based on Dean & Son's pantomime toy books issued by the London publisher in 1880. The illustrations were by "Clifford Merton" (i.e., William Roger Snow, who also used the pseudonym "Richard AndreÌ"). See Thomas E. Blom, The secret lives of Richard AndreÌ (1990), p. 38. Illustrated series list, lower cover, designed by William Bruton; cf. drawing in Betsy Beinecke Shirley Collection, Beinecke Library, Yale University, GEN MSS 764, Oversize Box 34, Folder 536.
