Philadelphia: Published by Mary Charles no. 71 South Second Str. The London edition gives the author's intials as, "B.A.T." Metal-engraved text and illustrations; engravings probably by William Charles. Cf. Weiss, Harry B. William Charles, early caricaturist, engraver and publisher of children's books, New York, 1932. Illustrations hand-colored. Mary Charles took over the business of her husband, William Charles, upon his death Aug. 29, 1820. Mary Charles died Jan. 25, 1823. Morgan & Yeager (likely the predecessor of Morgan & Sons) published in Philadelphia from 1823 to 1825. An advertisement published in Poulson's American Daily Advertiser (Philadelphia, Pa.), Dec. 18, 1823, p. 3 announced that Morgan & Yeager was selling children's books from the stock of William Charles' widow Mary, and of the firm's intent to publish children's books. Morgan & Sons published in Philadelphia between ca. 1825 through 1834. Neither Morgan & Yeager nor Morgan & Sons are listed in extant Philadelphia directories. "Morgan & Sons, have recently published, and for sale, juvenile books, embellished with neat engravings. ..."--advertisement, p. [4] of wrapper. |
