| American Antiquarian Society Copy Notes | Subject: A horizontal cartoon satirizing police misconduct. A policeman walks along a city street, carrying a glass of brandy behind his back. A "bummer" follows this policeman and, with a long straw, sips from his brandy glass. To the left, a police captain approaches the pair, saying "I have caught you this time." A boy, the "shoeblack," follows the captain, cheering him on: "Go for him Cap. This is not the first time." The caught policeman says "What can I do. How this old bum is sucking my brandy to have his revenge on me." The bum gives a toast: "Here's luck Bob at your expense." To the right, a publican looks out on the scene from his shop door, lamenting "I have now lost one of my best customers." Local Notes: American Antiquarian Society copy the gift of Jay Last, 1998, and has ink stamp: 2nd copy delivered to the art gallery, Nov 22, 1897. Inscribed in a contemporary hand: April 22, 1875. |
