| Catalog Notes | In verse. Title, imprint, and series title transcribed from p. [1] of printed wrapper. Series title transposed from head of title. According to NUC pre-1956, Harvard University Library owns a copy of a London edition of this title published by George Routledge & Sons [ca. 187?]. This copy contains a note in the hand of illustrator Walter Crane that the verses were written by Mrs. Randle Wilbraham. Apparently the McLoughlin Bros. issue is a pirate. "McLoughlin Bros., 71 & 73 Duane Street, N.Y."--publisher's advertisement, p. [4] of wrapper. The McLoughlin firm was located at that address between 1871 and 1886. "Unrivalled 'three cent books.' Uncle Toby's series--new ... Four full-page illustrations, elegantly printed in colors. 16 mo."--series title and list, p. [4] of wrapper. The earliest McLoughlin publisher's catalogue located listing this series is that for 1879-1880, which contains an entry for "Uncle Tobey's series.--New. Retail 3 cents each. ... Chattering Jack." First and last pages of text appear on p. [2] and [3] of wrapper. Wrapper and textual illustrations chromolithographed. |
