One sheet folded accordion style in five panels; on one side of the sheet are the drawing lessons; on the other side are printed advertisements for the patent medicines Plantation Bitters, Hagan's Magnolia Balm, Vaughn's Vegetable Lithontriptic Mixture, Sea Moss Farine, Mexican Mustang Liniment, and Lyon's Kathariron. These products were manufactured by the Lyon Manuf'g Co. and Rand Sea Moss Farine Co., both located at 53 Park Place New York. Sheet unfolded measures 15 x 59 cm. "Two cent toys. Easy pictures for slate drawing. 6 kinds. Per gross, $1 50"--McLoughlin Bros., publishers of toy books & juvenile books (ca. 1871-1874). Title page printed in red, black, and white ink to mimic a wrapper. Illustrations are in white line on a black background, produced by a relief process (zinc etching). Wood engraving in the Hagan's Magnolia Balm ad (p. [6]) signed: Tuttle [i.e., David H. Tuttle?]. |
