| American Antiquarian Society Copy Notes | Subject: Sentimental landscape print showing a lane in a small country town. A girl, seated at the base of a tree that rises from the center of the image, has set aside her book to look at a barking dog. Beside the tree, a boy hoists a bucket from a well. At left, a group of schoolchildren run over a small bridge; an artist has set up an easel to the side of the bridge and leans on the railing, gazing into the water. Buildings, including a church, line the sides of a street in the background. At right, two girls perch on the slats of a gate while a pair of boys push the gate open. A house and outbuildings stand beside the lane. Notes: The firm of Haskell & Allen were listed at this address between 1869 and 1873. Includes four lines on either side of the title from Samuel Woodworth's poem The old oaken bucket. Local Notes: American Antiquarian Society copy the gift of Jay T. Last, 2000. |
