Howland began his longtime Worcester printing career in 1835, and it lasted through about 1893. John W. Flagg was a bookseller and paper maker in Factory Village, Hancock, N.H. between 1832 and about 1857. Factory Village was legally incorporated into the newly formed town of Bennington Jan. 16, 1842.
