| Catalog Notes | Chromolithographed pictures portraying comic caricatures of members of a military brigade. Design of figures, bold primary colors, and illustration technique are characteristic of McLoughlin picture books issued between 1870 and 1890. The McLoughlin Bros. Catalogue of toy books, paper dolls, abc blocks, games, valentines, &c. for 1875-'76 lists what appears to be the penny paper doll version of these images in its "new" Mulligan Guard series, which includes Mulligan guard papers dolls "about four inches in height." One leaf folded accordion-style to make five leaves. |
