That same directory contains an entry for Benjamin F. Ells as a member of the bookselling firm Ells, Marquis & Co. The Dayton directory for 1858-1859 is the only extant Dayton directory located that lists Benjamin F. Ells as an individual book dealer, although he is listed in the directories for 1860-1861, and 1868-1869 with no occupation. According to W. Coyle, Ells lived in Dayton between 1835 and 1874; Coyle claims that Ells' last imprint was a Dayton city directory for 1856. Ells also worked in at least nine different partnerships, one of which was L.F. Claflin & Co. Ells sold his printing equipment between 1863 and 1864. Cf. W. Coyle, Ohio authors and their books, 1962. In printed wrapper. |
