| Catalog Notes | An abridgment of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. Cover title transcription: Second series. Loomis' illuminated household stories for little folks with illustrations by Darley, Thwaites, Dallas, Oertel, McLenan, Herrick & Ward[.] Robinson Crusoe. According to New York city directories, engraver and publisher Pascal Loomis was located at 15 Dutch St. only between 1857 and 1858. The firm name "Brown, Loomis & Co." was listed in the New York city directory for 1858 (copyright 1857); the address given was 11 Dutch St. Copyright 1855 by Brown, Loomis & Co. Last page blank. In printed stiff-paper cover; cover printed in red and black ink. At foot of frontispiece plate, "Printed in oil colors, by Brown, Loomis & Co." Title plate tinted grey; cover also tinted grey, and printed in red and black ink. Title plate signed by William H. Thwaites. Textual wood engravings variously signed by Pascal Loomis, Charles Edmonds, Phineas Annin and Pascal Loomis, Annin & Co., Thwaites, and Albert Bobbett and Edward Hooper. Wood-engraved pictorial design on upper cover signed: Annin & Co. Sc. "Second series"--at head of upper cover. "This series of fairy stories has ... been listened to and read by children with inexpressible delight, which other books have failed to afford them. The extravagance of the stories ... render them peculiarly adapted to induce children to acquire a love for reading, and to aid them to cultivate the affections, sympathies, fancy, and imagination."--publisher's advertisement for "Loomis's illuminated household stories, for little folks.
