| Catalog Notes | Half-title: Shakspearian tales in verse by Mrs. Valentine. Illustrated by R. Andre. Cover title: Shakepearian tales in verse by Mrs. Valentine. Probably not published before 1882. Frederick Warne & Co. was located at Bedford St., Covent Garden in London from at least 1875 to at least 1910. The Publishers' trade list annual (1882) contains a catalog for A.C. Armstrong & Son that lists the firm at 714 Broadway, New York. This catalog contains the following description: "Shakespearian tales in verse. A rhyming version of some of the popular plays of Shakspeare. By Mrs. Valentine. With about one hundred full pages of colored and other illustration, from original designs by R. AndreÌ, engraved by Emrik & Binger. One royal quarto volume, elegantly bound in extra cloth, full gilt sides and edges. Price, 3.00." The PTLA for 1881 has a catalog for A.C. Armstrong & Son, but that catalog does not contain listing for Shakspearian tales in verse. Text printed in sepia ink. Text is framed in light brown border. Blank leaves are inserted in between full color chromolithograph illustrations and succeeding pages. In grained cloth; grains vary. Covers stamped in black and gilt with pictorial images taken from Shakespeare's plays. "Designs by AndreÌ. Chromolithographed by Emrik & Binger. 15 Holborn Viaduct. London."--verso of title page (p. [4]). "Richard AndreÌ" is the pseudonym of artist William Roger Snow. "Contents: The tempest. The merchant of Venice. The taming of the shrew. The winter's tale."--verso of title page, (p. [4]). |
