| Catalog Notes | Written in the style of Heinrich Hoffmann. According to bibliographer Reiner Rühle, Sugary Tom was originally written in English; cf. Rühle's Böse Kinder (1999). Davis, Porter & Co. published in Philadelphia between 1865 and 1866. Wood engravings are hand-colored under the direction of the publisher. "We have just published a series of new books expressly to amuse children, while, at the same time, they inculcate excellent principles of morality and correct behavior. ... The Slovenly Peter series. They are in quarto form (size, 8 by 10 inches,) and from their size we are enabled to make the illustrations very large; and having them colored in bright colors ... Each volume contains from 20 to 30 illustrations, and is sold for 25 cents. ... Sugary Tom, Harry Cobus, and other stories. ... Those who desire to have the whole series neatly bound, can obtain them at the same price as for the paper covers, by inquiring for A laughter book for very little people; and Comical pages for little folks. Each in one volume 4to., cloth gilt, for 1.50."--p. [4] of wrapper. |
