| Catalog Notes | According to the Oxford companion to children's literature the first English edition was published in 1877. Walter Crane's letter to the editor of Scribner's monthly denouncing the poor quality of the unauthorized McLoughlin Bros. edition of The baby's opera is dated May 25, 1877. This letter was subsequently printed in the September, 1877 issue of Scribner's monthly (v. 14, p. 721). In printed boards with cloth spine. Boards printed in yellow and black ink. The illustrations are unauthorized copies of Crane's originals. The illustrations in the issue hand do not have the Crane monogram found in the 1877 issue published by George Routledge and Sons.
