| American Antiquarian Society Copy Notes | Subject: Humorous print using the proliferation of advertising bills on city walls to comic effect. At left, a young man is asleep on the ground, his head resting on a lamppost, a large pile of posters beside him. City buildings rise at top, in the background. Numerous advertising posters are pasted on a wall beside him, despite the "post no bills" sign at upper left. They are arranged so that they are humorous when read from top to bottom. For example, two bills combined read: "Annual meeting The American Temperance Society will / Use Gibson's 'cabinet' whiskey." Notes: Copyright 1877 by the Novelty Publishing Co. The American Antiquarian Society copy stamped in multiple places: L.B. Fiske. Bill poster and general advertiser. Office: 29 Mechanic St., Worcester, Mass. Local Notes: American Antiquarian Society copy trimmed. |
