| Catalog Notes | "A glance at a little girl's primer, in which poor rhymes, false measure, bad English, and worse pictures, seemed calculated to lower all love and taste for the beautiful and graceful, suggested the accompanying fairy tale, in which I have endeavored to weave pleasant associations around the first lesson of childhood."--preface, p. [3]. This is a variant of BAL15294 in which there is no chromolithographed title plate; instead there is a chromolithographed floral frontispiece which is also used (with different tints) in The floral year, by Anna Peyre Dinnies, published in Boston by B.B. Massey in 1847 (copyright 1845). The title page of The floral year gives William Sharp as the lithographer; he may well have been the lithographer for The flower alphabet. Caption title: The flower alphabet, or Little Mary's first lesson. Alphabet does not include U or X. Copyright 1845 by Samuel Colman. Samuel Colman published at 30 Cornhill, Boston, from 1846 to 1847. Pagination: [1] leaf of plates, [2] p. (title page and verso), [5] leaves of text, [1] blank leaf, [24] leaves of plates with captions in verse. In red cloth. Title page printed in red and blue ink; illustrations chromolithographed. |
