| Catalog Notes | "For sometime it was supposed to be a fictitious story, but it is now well known to be a true account of David Saunders and his family. In the present edition, there have been added to the former book some interesting stories of the Shepherd and his children, together with an account of his sickness and death."--"Preface to this edition."--p. 4. The American Sunday-School Union was located at 146 Chestnut St., Philadelphia from 1827 through 1853. The spelling "Chesnut" was abandoned early in this period. In marbled boards with leather spine. Numbered on spine: 174. "The present edition is also ornamented with two fine wood engravings, the original sketches having been made on the spot, by a nephew of the Bishop of Salisbury, who is now a member of Kenyon College in this country; and whose father is present Vicar of West Lavington, the place of the shepherd's residence and burial."
