| American Antiquarian Society Copy Notes | Subject: A horizontal oval scene in a square border decorated with stars and with a Union shield in each corner. A Union soldier sleeps next to a campfire. His gun and a drum lie beside him. A letter and torn envelope are on the ground next to him. In the backgound are tents and three soldiers gathered around another campfire. A full moon rises in the sky. The clouds part to reveal his vision of homecoming: he is embracing his wife, while his two children greet him. A house and picket fence are in the background. Notes: Companion to The soldiers home, the vision, Gale 5998. See Gale. Currier and Ives 1984, p. 621. Under title: 200. Poem under image: Stretched on the ground the war worn soldier sleeps, beside the lurid watch fires fitful glare; and dreams that on the field of fame he reaps, renown and honors, which he haste's to share; with those beloved ones who gathering come, to bid their hero husband father welcome home; fond dreamer may thy blissful vison be, a true fore shadowing of the fates to thee.
