| Catalog Notes | In verse. Caption title: A visit from St. Nicholas. Title and imprint statement transcribed from upper cover. By Clement Clarke Moore. "McLoughlin Bros. latest games and books. Variety cob-house building blocks. ... Criss cross spelling slips. ... Games of Cash and Akambo, ... Game of Mon."--publisher's advertisement, lower cover. The games Cash and Akambo were listed under "New stock for the seasons of 1882 and 1883" in the Catalogue of McLoughlin Bros., toy books (1882). A price of 2.00 each is listed both in the publisher's advertisement and in the publisher's catalogue for the Variety Cob-House Building Blocks, Cash and Akambo, as well as for Mon. Cover and illustrations printed in colored ink. Copy in hand has the inscription, "Illustrations by the first American cartoonist Thomas Nast." However, the illustrations are not signed, and they do not seem to be the work of Nast. (See Nast-illustrated McLoughlin issues of the Night before Christmas published in Aunt Louisa's big picture series (ca. 1871-1874).) Publisher's advertisement, lower cover, bears an illustration signed "W.B." (i.e, W. Bruton?). |
