| Catalog Notes | Picture alphabet, interspersed with simple reading exercises. Phrase "copyrighted by" printed using a red stamp. "New linen books. 267. [inventory number] Little pet's a b c"--Catalogue of McLoughlin Bros. toy books, 1886, p. 1. "Linen books. 6 cents each ... No. 267.--Little pet's a b c --linen. A primer of 12 pages, printed in colors, on linen cloth."--p. 15 of same catalogue. Variant issues noted. Issue in hand bears pictures of an arch, apple tree, and antelope for the letter "A." Another issue bears pictures of an archer, anchor, and arrow for "A." There is no overlap between alphabet pictures in these issues. The reading lessons are identical. Page [12] has a design featuring a bald man in a kimono holding a parasol in his right hand and a Caucasian girl in his left hand who is dressed in a white dress with a blue sash. |
