| Catalog Notes | Title, series, and imprint statement transcribed from p. [1] of printed wrapper. Series title transposed from head of title. Caption title is "Children in the woods." Another issue with identical wrapper bears the caption title, "The story of the children in the wood." The textual illustrations of these two issues are completely different; those of the issue in hand portray the evil uncle as a brunette; those of the other issue show him as a graying blonde with a red skull cap. The storylines also diverge: in this issue, the children die of starvation in the woods; while in the other issue, the children are saved from death. "Cinderella series. Retail 9 cents each. ... illustrations printed in oil colors. ... The babes in the wood."--series entry in the McLoughlin Bros. trade catalogue for 1879-1880. Copy in hand bears an inscription dated Christmas, 1879. Wrapper illustration printed in red, green, and black ink. "New picture books for little children."--publisher's advertisement, p.
