| Catalog Notes | Title, imprint, and series statement transcribed from upper cover. Series title transposed from head of title. Caption title is "The story of the children in the wood." Another issue with identical wrapper bears the caption title, "Children in the woods." The textual illustrations of these two issues are completely different; those of the issue in hand portray the evil uncle as a graying blonde with a red skull cap; those of the other issue show him as a brunette. The storylines also diverge: in the other issue, the children die of starvation in the woods, while in the issue in hand, the children are saved from death. Publisher's advertisement, lower cover, includes entries for the board games Cash and Akambo, and Mon. Both of these games were assigned the retail price of 2.00. Identical ads are found in the Catalogue of McLoughlin Bros. toy books, games ... (New York, [ca. 1886]); but the catalogue list price of each of these items is 1.50. Wrapper illustration printed in red, green, and black ink. Textual illustrations produced by a relief process (zinc etchings?) and printed in color. |
