| Catalog Notes | Cover title. Series statement at head of title. Caption title is "The story of the children in the wood." Another issue with identical wrapper bears the caption title, "Children in the woods." The textual illustrations of these two issues are completely different; those of the issue in hand portray the evil uncle as a graying blonde with a red skull cap; those of the other issue show him as a brunette. The storylines also diverge; in the other issue, the children die of starvation in the woods, while in the issue in hand, the children are saved from death. Alphabets (upper-case and lower-case) printed in red ink appear on inner covers. Text of issue in hand is identical to an issue dated ca. 1886, in which the text is printed on leaves. Wrapper illustration printed in red, green, and black ink. Textual illustrations produced by a relief process (zinc etchings?) and printed in color. A lithograph of a girl wearing a summer dress with a broad sash and holding a hoop, stick, sand pail, and shovel appears on lower cover. |
