Cover, caption and running title: Robinson Crusoe. "By arrangement with Messrs. Cassell and Company, London, the illustrations to this edition of 'Robinson Crusoe' have been printed from electrotypes from the original wood engravings."--Publishers' note, verso of title page. Simon Houfe, in his Dictionary of British book illustrators and caricaturists (1978), gives an 1896 publication date to the first edition of Robinson Crusoe published with Paget's drawings. However, an edition of Robinson Crusoe was issued with Paget's illustrations by Philadelphia publisher Henry Altemus in 1895. Cf. ohlg books record in RLIN. Copy in hand bears an inscription dated 1894. Separate issues noted; issue in hand has no frame around title page. Frontispiece features a turbaned man and a prostrate lion at the water's edge, with the caption, "This was game indeed." Another issue has a scrolled title-page frame printed in yellow and black ink. Frontispiece features a picture of two men in a sailboat, one of whom is pointing rifle at a man in the water, with the caption, "If you come near the boat, I'll shoot you." Title page printed in red and black ink. In green cloth binding featuring a cover design of the shipwreck, the rowboat journey, and Robinson Crusoe seated at his table with his pets. Cover design printed in red, black, and gilt ink. Illustrations signed by Walter Paget and engraver P. Naumann.
