Some verses include directions for games that can be played while reciting the rhymes. Running title: Mother Goose's melodies. Spine title: Rhymes chimes and jingles. "30 cent edition. No. 146.--Mother Goose complete. Contains rhymes, chimes, and melodies, and illustrations. Royal 16mo. 128 pages. Plain, with handsome stiff covers in colors."--Catalogue of McLoughlin Bros. toy books, 1886, p. 11. Issue in hand bears thin red line page borders characteristic of McLoughlin books issued in the 1880s. Pictorial cover probably drawn by Charles Kendrick, who illustrated McLoughlin titles issued in the 1880s. Stiff-paper cover and title plate chromolithographed. Illustrations variously signed by "Arnold sc.," "Dalziel," and "HF" (i.e., Harry Fenn?).
