Some verses include directions for games that can be played while reciting the rhymes. Running title: Mother Goose's melodies. Title leaf chromolithographed. Text set in thin red frames. This style of frame is featured throughout the Catalogue of McLoughlin Bros. toy books (1886). Chromolithography on title leaf is characteristic of McLoughlin books issued ca. 1880-1900. The forementioned catalogue contains the entry, "No. 144.--Mother Goose's rhymes ... Sixty four pages plain, with stiff covers in bright colors." (p. 11). Illustrations printed in color by a relief process (zinc etching?). Illustrations variously signed by "Howard del." (i.e., Justin H. Howard), "Dalziel," "HMS" (i.e., Henry Stacy Marks), "HF" (i.e., Harry Fenn?), and "Arnold sc."
